Troubleshooting: Low Open Rate

Troubleshooting: Low Open Rate

Low open rates usually indicate an issue with deliverability, sender reputation, or subject line effectiveness.

1. Check Deliverability (Most Common Cause)

If emails are not reaching the inbox, they will not be opened.

  • Verify your domain is properly authenticated (SPF, DKIM, DMARC). You can use MXtoolbox to check your domain's DNS record.

  • Check if emails are landing in spam or promotions by sending test emails from your campaign

  • You can also run Spamtester.ai

  • Review if your sending domain or IP is blacklisted

  • Review email content and ensure there are only 1–2 attachments or links

  • Do not add links or attachments in your first email

2. Review Sender Reputation

High bounce rates can damage reputation.

  • Check weekly analytics to review bounce rate and open rate patterns weekly

  • Check the campaign’s bounce rate; it should be below 2%

  • Verify Emailsbefore sending

  • Sudden volume spikes can trigger filtering. Make sure to set daily limits

3. Analyze Subject Lines

Even with good deliverability, weak subject lines reduce opens.

  • Avoid overly salesy or spam-like wording

  • Test shorter, clearer subject lines

  • Personalization can improve open rates

  • Avoid excessive punctuation or capitalization

4. Check Audience Quality

If targeting is too broad or outdated, engagement drops.

  • Remove invalid or inactive emails

  • Segment by relevance or intent

  • Avoid cold, unverified lists

5. Sending Behavior

Email platforms may filter based on behavior patterns.

  • Avoid sending too many emails too quickly

  • Keep consistent sending patterns

  • Ensure proper warm-up for new domains
